PDP Candidate Withdraws From Ebonyi Council Elections
Barrister Ugochukwu Ezekiel, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Ohaozara for the forthcoming local government election in Ebonyi State, has announced his withdrawal from the race.
Dr David Ogbonna, the Director General of Barr. Ugochukwu Ezekiel Campaign Organization said the decision isn’t unconnected to the violence unleashed on their campaign team and threat to lives.
Dr. Ogbonna in a press statement issued earlier today, appealed to their supporters to stand-down completely from the election as the Ohaozara chapter won’t be participating.
The statement reads:
You’re all witnesses to the effective and robust campaigns we’ve staged all over the Wards across Ohaozara LGA in preparation for the Saturday 30th, 2022 Local Government elections in Ebonyi State and you’ve seen the wide acceptability we’ve enjoyed as a party and that have been enjoyed by our Candidate.
During our weeks-long campaigns, we’ve provided the people of Ohaozara a path to progress and prosperity. Our Candidate shared his manifesto targeted at Prosperity, Security and better welfare for workers in Ohaozara Local Government. He provided something unique and was widely accepted by the people.
However, the events of couple of days have called us to a round table to discuss extensively and reviewed all plans and actions, going forward.
For some days now, we’ve received unnumbered complaints from Campaign Team and party members about threats to their lives. We’ve received calls from unknown numbers threatening our Candidates and members of our team.
We’ve recorded plentiful of sponsored violence at venue of campaigns of some of Councillorship Candidates. From Ugwulangwu to Okposi, and to Uburu, the complaints are similar. Threats and serious threats to lives of our members.
The state security outfit called Ebubeagu has not been neutral in the process. We’ve seen them accompanying Councillorship Candidates of the ruling party to disrupt Campaign venues of the PDP Candidates, and when we called their attention to threats to lives of our members, they give it blind eye.
Last night, some of our members in Okposi-Okwu slept outside their homes because of threats to their lives. The story is same in Ugwulangwu.
We had to review all concerns and agreed that the ambition of our Candidate does not worth the live of any our cherished members. We agreed that we can’t give in to counter-violence just to proceed in this election. We unanimously agreed that we rather lose doing the right thing than win doing the very wrong thing and endangering the lives of our people.
After our several meeting sessions, we’ve resolved that our Candidate, Barr. Ugochukwu Ezekiel will not be participating in the Ohaozara LGA election scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday 30th, 2022.
This is painful, given the enormous resources, energies and time committed to this task. However, we rather keep our heads high knowing that our members are safe than progressing in a democratic error.
We hereby appeal to our party members and teeming supporters to stand-down completely from the elections tomorrow as Ohaozara chapter of the People’s Democratic Party won’t be participating.
This decision is regrettable but taken for the best interest of all of us. We strongly believe that tomorrow holds greater lots for all of us.
Thanks for your anticipated understanding and continual supports for the party.
