The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) announced on Saturday that if the federal government does not free its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, from detention on November 4, the southeast region will be on lockdown for a week.
Recall that this is not the first time that IPOB has implemented a sit- at- home across the south- eastern states in solidarity with Kanu, who has been in DSS custody since July.
Kanu’ s appeal to be transferred to Kuje Correctional Service Centre was denied by a Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday, and his trial was postponed till November.
IPOB’ s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, stated in a statement released on Saturday that the new lockdown will be implemented between November 5 and 10, except on Sunday, November 7, to allow for Church services.
The lockdown, according to IPOB, will be a ” necessary sacrifice” for the people of the Southeast, and anyone who disobeys the instruction will be ” challenging the will of the people of Biafra project. ”
He said, ” Our leader, onyendu Mazi Nnamdi, must be released on or before November 4, because he has not committed any crime known to any law.
” If our leader Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi KANU is not released on or before November 4, we will begin a one- week sit- at- home on November 5, 2021, and end on November 10, 2021. ”
” Although we are well aware of the difficulties and negative consequences of this decision for our people, we are obligated to pursue it in the collective interest of Biafrans. ”
” We have spent time analyzing what happened on October 21 when our leader was arraigned in court and have determined that the federal government is just interested in humiliating him and keeping him in DSS custody.
” We all observed how security personnel barred and denied lawyers, journalists, Igbo delegates, respected traditional rulers, and other individuals who traveled from all over the world to witness his court case, keeping them outdoors in the scorching heat of the sun. ” What an embarrassment!
” We can no longer accept it. We will never allow Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to be tried secretly, and we will never let him be tried under Sharia law under any guise.
” Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is in DSS custody because of his desire for Biafra independence, and we must do everything we can to guarantee that he is released. ” We must make our sacrifices for him because he has sacrificed so much for us. ”
