Gunmen were reported to have broken into the Kabba Medium Security Custodial Center in Kogi, Nigeria, and let the prison open. This news was confirmed by the Federal Government.

According to Daily Post, the spokeswoman for Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola, Controller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) Haliru Nababa has delivered an overview of the agency’ s operations.

In a statement, she stated that the security officials on duty, which included 15 soldiers, 10 police officers, and 10 armed guards from the National Council of Security, fought valiantly to repel the attack by the gunmen but they were overpowered.

Unfortunately, two Correctional Service employees are still missing, while one soldier and one police officer were killed, according to the statement.

The Kabba Custodial Facility housed 294 detaineees, many of whom were able to flee after the gunmen detonated explosives along with the facility’ s outer gate, destroying three sides of it.

Some inmates, however, voluntarily returned to the facility this morning; 28 inmates didn’ t manage to escape.

Nababa is constantly keeping an eye on the issue, and a tour of the facilities is currently taking place.

To recapture escaped inmates, the government has established a Crisis Response Center, which has been activated, as well as a Special Taskforce that has been mobilized.

Already, an Inter- Agency Security Task Force has been formed to track down and apprehend the individuals who attacked the facility.

The general public is asked to maintain their composure because the situation has been brought under control.

We have also informed INTERPOL of their whereabouts if any of them attempt to flee outside our borders, the statement continued.

Aregbesola expressed confidence that security personnel will apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators of the crime.

The minister urged residents in the area surrounding the prison to be watchful and to report any weird or suspicious individuals to the appropriate law enforcement agency.
