The presidential election in 2023 is rapidly approaching, and Southern Nigeria may be the region that produces the next president, based on the rate at which Southern Governors are requesting for power transferred to their region.
It is believed that some Southern leaders in the APC, such as Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Yemi Osinbajo, are interested in running for president in the 2023 election, even though they have not publicly proclaimed their intentions.
Godswill Akpabio, the former governor of Akwa Ibom State, has expressed no interest in running for President of the country in 2023.
However, according to a source in the This Day newspaper, several Northern cabals may settle on him as the presidential candidate they will support in the presidential election of 2023.
It could be recalled that a delegation of notable Northern politicians, led by Mr Jubril Tafida, convener of Senator Godswill Akpabio For Common Good (SGACG), travelled to Kano, Nigeria, to drum up support for Akpabio ahead of the 2023 presidential election.
It is one of the North- Western states with a large voting population, and Kano State is no exception. President Buhari received over one million votes from the state in both the 2015 and 2019 presidential elections.
A group of Northern politicians made a wise decision by converging in Kano to rally support for the Minister in charge of Niger Delta affairs.
They made advantage of the National Interest magazine, which they started in Kano, to address any political misconceptions that some individuals may have regarding Akpabio’ s political views.
Take, for example, the controversy that rocked the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) last year, which is a commission under the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs.
According to the magazines’ report, the goal is to portray Akpabio as someone concerned about the well- being of the country.
The efforts of some Northern cabals is to depict Akpabio as someone capable of ruling the country in 2023, although he has not expressed interest in the 2023 presidential campaign, will be a significant boost to his political career.
The North has a larger voting population than the South, therefore any southern candidate who receives their support in 2023 will have a better chance of winning.
If the core northerners decide to support Akpabio, his chances of winning the APC presidential primary will be higher than those of Tinubu and any other southern candidate.
