Exercise is a prerequisite for a healthy life but most people tend to focus only on one type of exercise or activity which is not enough.
However, studies have shown that there are four types of exercise which are very important and each has its own benefit.
In this article,we will look at the four key types of exercise that are very beneficial to you with some examples.
1. Aerobic exercise
This type of exercise speeds up your heart rate and breathing. It is also called endurance activity because it gives your heart and lungs a workout thereby increasing endurance.
Aerobic exercise helps to lower the risk of diseases like diabetes, heart disease, colon and breast cancer.
Exercises that fall into this category are; climbing stairs, jogging or brisk walking, cycling and dancing.
This type of exercise helps to build your muscles and strength, making everyday activities easier.
Some of the benefits of strength training includes stimulation of bone growth, improved balance and posture, reduction of blood sugar and reduction of stress and pain in the lower back and joint.
Weight lifting is an important example of strength training.
3. Stretching or flexibility
Stretching helps to improve flexibility, making it easier for you to seamlessly perform tasks.
Stretching makes the muscles longer and more flexible which in turn increases your range of motion and reduces pain and the risk for injury.
Some examples of stretching exercise includes the ankle stretch and calf stretch exercise.
4. Balance exercise
Balance exercises makes you feel steadier on your feet and helps to prevent falls which is a common problem when we grow old.
Typical balance exercises include standing on one foot or walking heel to toe, with your eyes open or closed.
