Late General Sani Abacha was a Nigerian military general, a dictator who served as Nigeria military head of state from 1983 until his sudden death in 1998. He was implicated in Nigerian government coups in the 1980s and 1990s.
He was also a chief of army staff from 1985 to 1990, chief of defense staff from 1990 to 1993, he held the title of the first Nigerian soldier to attain the rank of a full military general without skipping a single rank.
The story about how he died has however remain unsolve with many Nigerians he was poisoned with a spiked apple juice in the company of some prostitutes.
- That he died on top of women.
That he died of poisoned apples.
That his concubines poisoned the apples he ate.
That a female assassin from Spain disguised as one of his women to poison him.
“United States intelligence analysts say there is evidence that Gen. Sani Abacha, the Nigerian dictator who died unexpectedly last month, was poisoned while in the company of three prostitutes,” the New York Times reported on 11 July 1998.
The Death of General Sani Abacha (1998)
“I know for a fact he was poisoned,” a diplomat with close contacts in the Nigerian military told The Irish Times. “My sources in the army have confirmed this. A small group of officers thought the only solution was to poison him and this is what they did.”
But Why Did Nigeria Believe The Story
Investigation were probably not done properly to write off the false story, internet was not as popular, and easier back then like now, so the true story couldn’t be verified.
Many people said what they heard, and eventually, different stories circulated. From what I heard, and what I witnessed, general Sani Abacha didn’t really look like someone that could be killed with ordinary poisoned apples.
The fact that his foods would be tasted by guards before he eats them also pull down the credibility of the false story.
How General Sani Abacha Actually Died?
According different reports, and sources, General Sani Abacha died on 8 June 1998 in Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja of Heart Attack.
However, many people speculated he was assassinated, but the government revealed his death was caused by Heart Attack. He didn’t die of poisoned apples, he didn’t die on top of women, his chief security officer, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha also testified he died of heart attack.
On 15 July 1998, the Irish Times reported that the Nigerian government had said Abacha “died of a heart attack on June 8th. But there has been widespread speculation that he was poisoned with spiked apple juice while with prostitutes.”
“blood, urine and tissue samples” taken and analysed in Germany soon after his death revealed no evidence of poisoning. “This. . .may douse fears in some quarters that General Abacha might have died of unnatural causes,” the independent Thisday.
