Schools in Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna, Oyo and Others Should Be Shut Down With Immediate Effect (Opinion)

The federal government had shut down school early this year due to the ravaging Covid-19 pandemic second wave, and even though the government is ignoring the fact that number of infected keep increasing on a daily basis by reopening schools, the lives of students could still be at risk as schools are open places where this virus can be transmitted quickly due to the large number of students especially in the tertiary institutions.

In my opinion, I will like to give reasons why the government should shut down schools in Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna, Oyo and Rivers state to protect the lives of students in Nigeria;

1) Due to the large number of Covid-19 cases in these states : Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna, Oyo and Rivers state are key states having massive number of people that have been infected with the Covid-19 infection. These states have more than 5,000 cases and this seems to be a huge threat to the live of Nigerians especially students that are exposed to this infection being in their respective schools where their are large number of people.

In my opinion, Lagos and others states having above 5,000 reported cases of Covid-19 infection should shut down schools in their respective states due to the threat the number of infected may cause later in the future.

2) Due to the large population in these states: One of the reasons Covid-19 cases are more in these states is because of their population.

We all know that Lagos state is the commercial centre of the country due to the large number of industries and commercial transactions that happens on daily basis in the state, with over 20 million people present in Lagos state alone, there is a high high risk that the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic may spread faster due to ignorance and the less attention that is been paid to this infection.

With all this being said, I strongly believe that if schools are closed in Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna, Oyo and Rivers state, the risk of students getting infected will be reduced and there will be a decrease in the number of Covid-19 cases which could lead to the Country’s freedom from the Coronavirus deadly disease.
