Many a naysayer believes that the All Progresives Congress won’t survive till the next general elections. They based their poorly grounded opinion on a number of crises that the ruling party had last year. They went on to conclude that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) would return to power soon.
But with the look of things and a consideration of recent events, the APC isn’t near going down in term of its domination of the Nigerian government and politics. Even the party is far from being defeated at the national level.
Before the last year ended, the APC enjoyed very important defection into its fold from the apparently struggling PDP. The APC which the pessimists consider to be getting weaker was able to welcome new members from the PDP.
Nigerians wouldn’t forget how the former speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, returned to the APC only few years after he rejoined the same People’s Democratic Party (PDP). President Muhammadu Buhari was at hand to welcome him as he was led to the president by Mai Mala Buni.
That aside, Nigerians must not forget how the unimaginable happened. Dave Umahi, Ebonyi State Governor, parted ways with the PDP in that same late 2020. He said his goodbye to the party to further destabilize and weaken the party. The governor was a very close ally of Muhammadu Buhari.
Let’s say Nigerians can’t remember that one, what about the defection of the senator representing Adamawa North in the upper chamber of the House of Senate, Mr. Elisha Ishaku Abbo? Of course, his defection was unpredictable because he could have been convinced to stay in the PDP.
But as early as February, 2021, political stalwarts have been joining the APC. It is marvelous to see that the APC is rather having new members instead of diminishing in term of numerical strength.
A former deputy governor in Osun State, Christopher Iyiola Omisore, has finally arrived in the ruling All Progresives Congress. It was rumoured that he had become a member of the party, but he never came out to make it clear whether he had truly become an APC member.
He laid to rest every rumour when he participated in the ongoing revalidation programme of the APC. The political party is revalidating its member’s registration across the country. Mr. Omisore had registered himself and hence become an APC member.
So, the APC is stronger with the defection of Mr. Omisore. The PDP will struggle to win Ile-Ife axis of the state. Even the APC can rely heavily on the strength and sagacity of Omisore in the four local government areas in Ile-Ife federal constituency.
Only yesterday, a former chief of army staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Azubuike Ihejirika (rtd.) became a new powerful member of the APC.
Normally, Mr. Azubuike Ihejirika would be expected to join the PDP if at all he has interest in partisan politics. He was the COAS when ex president Goodluck Jonathan was in power. And at that time, the PDP was in control. That means the PDP made him become the COAS.
He became an APC member by registering at Isuikwuato in Abia North Senatorial District of Abia State.
He completed his registration in ward 2 in the presence of the ward chairman, Mr. Iheanyi Chukwu. He was not the only one who witnessed the registration of Mr. Azubuike Ihejirika. Others APC leaders were Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who currently represents Abia North Senatorial District in the National Assembly.
While welcoming Azubuike Ihejirika, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu said, “Gen Ihejirika’s decision to join us today in the APC is no doubt a great one and I must commend him for taking the bold step after over a year of convincing him to join the party.
