See How Being An Ex- CBN Governor Gave Soludo A Better Winning Ground

It is looking increasingly likely that the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chukwuma Soludo will emerge as the winner of the yet- to- be concluded Anambra State governorship election which begun on Saturday.

Soludo Gathered Victory From Almost All Polls

Soludo, who had already gathered more votes in each of the earlier stated six local government areas, has also led his opponents in two additional local government areas— Agwuata and Orumba North.

He won Andy Uba of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Valentine Ozigbo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Aguata LGA, the three main contenders’ native council. But the three gladiators had triumphed in their separate polling units. In a very likely scenario of the direction of victory persisting till the release of the final result, Soludo will begin to receive congratulatory messages for accomplishing an age- long desire of occupying the number one political office of Anambra State.

In a clime where corruption scandal is a regular tag for public office holders, keeping a flawless public image years after a five- year term of supervising Nigeria’ s number one treasury house is not a usual feat. That is the story of the last but one governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Soludo Big Mark He Left In CBN

Since leaving the CBN top job, the 60- year old professor of Economics has remained a star, meaning different things to different people who regard him from the viewpoints of quality, honesty, performance or the rest of his basic beliefs.

As CBN governor, he demystified the banking industry, performing what most Nigerians felt was impossible, including the banking sector reform, a groundbreaking recapitalization process that cut operators with less than N25 billion capital base off the nation’ s banking landscape. The goal was to put an end to formerly repeated bank liquidations that saw clients losing hard- earned money.

There is no gainsaying that the multiplier effect of that historic step was phenomenal as thousands of people secured jobs in the bigger banks that eventually emerged; many more jobs were created in companies financed by these bigger banks just as thousands of small, medium and large enterprises saw opportunities to access credit facilities from the banks. Also, hundreds of people that now hold bureau de change and microfinance bank licenses, among others, owe their gratitude to the inventiveness of this radical economic thinker.

Big Time Economic Activities By Soludo

Soludo served the federal government as top economic adviser to former President Olusegum Obasanjo and chief executive officer of National Planning Commission during which he formulated the economic agenda of the government called NEEDS.

Many years down the road, the nation has not stopped tapping from his depth of experience. Soludo now serves as a member of the Economic Advisory Council (EAC) created by President Mohammadu Buhari, to replace the Economic Management Team of the federal government.

In accordance with its charter, the EAC is responsible for advising the president on economic policy matters. This includes fiscal analysis, economic growth, and a variety of domestic and international economic issues, which it does in collaboration with relevant cabinet members and heads of monetary and fiscal agencies.

Soludo, a distinguished patriot, has continued to make significant contributions to nation- building by taking views on matters of critical national concern and proposing solutions to economic challenges. According to him, Nigeria must take steps to eradicate the system of multiple exchange rates, advising that the disparity between the then official and parallel market exchange rates of the naira be reduced to three to five percent at the time of writing.

According to this learned professor, the destructive Coronavirus (Covid- 19) pandemic in Nigeria and Africa was mishandled because of the use of the ‘ cut and paste’ technique to controlling the pandemic. He urged African leaders to reconsider a total economic shutdown, arguing that the continent could not withstand such a situation for an extended period. According to him, the infrastructure necessary to support the lockdown do not exist in the majority of African countries, and African governments cannot continue to deprive their citizens of food for an extended period.

Some Of The Honours Soludo Has Bagged

Having graduated with honors from the Uga Boys Secondary School in Anambra State, earning first- class honours in Economics, an MSc in Economics, and a PhD in Economics from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and being promoted to professor at the age of 38 after meeting the requirements to be a professor at 32, Soludo has demonstrated that he is a gifted provider of solutions to social and economic problems facing the world in general and Nigeria in particular.

Soludo, a world- class technocrat and scholar, had previously lived in Ethiopia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and had traveled to 45 other countries around the world as a consultant to countries and approximately 20 international development and financial institutions before being appointed by the Nigerian government to serve the country. His counsel saved a number of countries and resulted in the creation of millions of employment. In his story, a guy who has earned his place as a global citizen while yet maintaining his simple village boy status, as he loves to describe to himself, is told.

As a result, it is not surprising that the world has recognized him with a slew of prizes, the most notable of which was the award for best governor of a central bank in Africa and the world at the time. Soludo is still regarded as one of the top 100 most important Africans, despite the fact that he has been out of politics for many years. In Nigeria, he has won over 100 awards and honors, including the third- highest national honor, the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic, which is the third- highest national honor (CFR).

” One of the bright lights of our nation, whose leadership characteristics are admirable and whose desire to listen and learn is simply infectious, ” former President Olusegun Obasanjo reportedly said of him.
