The name Jay Jay Okocha will forever ring a bell in the mind and hearts of Most Nigerian Football Lovers. The retired Nigerian Midfielder is known for his flamboyant playing techniques whenever he is on the football pitch.
Augustine Azuka “Jay-Jay” Okocha was born on the 14th of August 1973. He is 47 years old. He is a Nigerian former professional footballer who played as an attacking midfielder. He was born in Enugu, Enugu state, in the eastern part of Nigeria.
He earned the nickname”Jay Jay” as a young boy while playing football. He began playing football on the streets as a little boy with a makeshift ball as he could not afford to get an actually football.
On the issue of where he actually hails from, Jay-Jay Okocha has erroneously been quoted by some media houses as being an Igbo man from the Eastern Part of Nigeria particularly, Enugu state. This error stems from the fact that he was born and brought up in Enugu State and his name is also borne by those who are from the Eastern part of the country.
I used to believe this before until I carried out a personal research into the life of this great soccer star and discovered that he was not from the Eastern part of Nigeria. Jay Jay Okocha is an Anioma man who hails from Ogwashi-Ukwu area in Aniocha South Local government Area of Delta State. The Anioma tribe is a subgroup of the Igbo ethnic group living in the South-South Region of Nigeria, particularly Delta state. He is a notable son of Ogwashi-Ukwu and a stadium called the “Jay Jay Okocha Stadium” in Ogwashi-Ukwu was named after the football star.
