Senator Shehu Sani has taken to his Official Twitter handle to react over the recent proposal received by the House of Representative’s Special Committee on Constitution Review to change the Nigeria’s name to Untied African Republic.
According to a report, the House of Representative’s Special Committee on Constitution Review has received an offer to change Nigeria’s current name to Untied African Republic or United Alkebulan Republic.
While presenting the offer to the committee at the South West Zonal Public Hearing in Lagos on Wednesday, June 2, 2021, Adeleye Jokotoye stated that the current name ‘Nigeria’ was imposed on the country by its previous colonial masters, and needs to be changed.
He further revealed that the new name will have a great impact on the country positively, adding that Nigeria is made up of hundreds of ethnic groups that need to be united, and that’s why he chose the name United African Republic.

In response to this proposal, Senator Shehu Sani revealed that changing the country’s name is not necessary, but if the name has to be changed, then it’s should be called Republic of Songhai, because the ancient Songhai Empire extended to different parts of the present Nigeria.
He further revealed that the name Ghana was derived from an ancient African Kingdom that never extended to the present territory of Ghana.
