There have been different agitation in Nigeria in recent months. Many Igbo groups as well as supporters of the Yoruba Nation have urged President Buhari to grant their request to exit Nigeria and form a country of their own. The secession agitation has been going on for a very long time and many supporters of the movement have been arrested by the Nigerian government.
On Tuesday, despite the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu and another member of IPOB, a Nigerian Senator told President Muhammadu Buhari to release Nnamdi Kanu and work for the release of Sunday Igboho. The senator, Orji Kalu told President Buhari to forgive Sunday Igboho, Nnamdi Kanu, and their supporters of all their crimes. Orji Kalu stated that this is the right time the Nigerian government has to grant amnesty to Nnamdi Kanu, Sunday Igboho, and other supporters of the group.
Buttressing his points, Orji Kalu told President Buhari that many terrorists were granted amnesty after they submitted themselves to the Nigerian government. Due to the good way the arrested terrorist was treated and released back into society, he urged President Buhari to treat IPOB members the same way and let them return to society as normal people. Orji Kalu believes that granting amnesty to Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Igboho would lead to unity in the country and the country would experience peace.
Part of his statement read, ” We can not continue to fight all the time, it is high time that we end all forms of crisis in the country and promote peace. I am pleading with the Nigerian government to grant amnesty to Sunday Igboho, Nnamdi Kanu, and their supporters just like the type of amnesty that was given to bandits and terrorists who allegedly submitted to the government. ”
” There should be unity and love in the country. Nigeria is going to be better if all of us continue to remain as one and maintain peace. The best way we can promote peace now is for the government to release Sunday Igboho and Nnamdi Kanu by granting them and amnesty. There is a need to call for a roundtable discussion where the problem of the country would be solved by all parties involved. “
