When Mrs Eunice Ngozi Onuegbusi, a poor woman from Ukwulu (Amagu village) in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra state was offered 5, 000 Naira by some party agent to vote against her conscience but she declined and insisted on voting her preferred candidate she didn’ t know it will turn her into an instant celebrity.
That singular act drew the attention of the governor who rewarded her with N1m cash and appreciated her selflessness defense of democracy by rejecting the 5, 000 naira offered by the vote buyer.
His also drew the attention of the Governor– elect who described the woman as a true representation of the spirit of Ndi Anambra state.
Soludo who was speaking after he receivced the certificate of return at the Awka office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, he stressed that the woman made Anmbra proud and she deserves to be celebrated.
Soludo said: ” At this moment, I summarize the action of the woman of Ukwulu who rejected N5000 to influence her voting as a metaphor that represents the spirit of Anambra. The woman said I am poor; I don’ t have any money in my pocket, but I won’ t take N5000. That is the spirit of Anambra and her action is the resilience of the Anambra spirit” .
While speaking about his victory at the just concluded election in the state, he said: ” This is the moment and the hour has come. God knew that at this hour, my deputy and I will have these certificates in our hands.
” We thank God for making this day. This is Anambra, the Light of the Nation. This is the state that helped to bring democracy to Nigeria.
” This is the state of Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Dr Nwafor Orizu, Sir Loius Ojukwu, Professor Chinua Achebe, Chimamanda Adichie and many others” .
