After weeks of being declared wanted by the Nigerian security operatives, Sunday Adeyemo Igboho has been arrested at Contonou, the capital of Benin Republic on Tuesday, July 20.
According to the report on Daily Post, Igboho was arrested at an airport while trying to flee to Eastern Europe, Germany, where his second wife and six children reside.
Barrister Pelumi Olajengbesi, the lawyer representing Sunday Igboho disclosed that his client was not arrested by security operatives. Rather, he surrendered himself.
The lawyer stated that his client decided to make himself available so that justice for the Yoruba race will be established; and also, Nigeria can live in peace and harmony.
The Oduduwa Republic agitator has been on the run ever since his residence was raided by operatives of the Department of State Security, known as DSS, on July 1st, 2021. The secret police revealed that illegal firearms and charms were recovered from his residence.
In a statement dated 9 July, by the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) to the Department of State Service and Nigerian Police Force, the Federal Government raised an alarm concerning the alleged plan by Sunday Igboho to acquire a new International passport in order to flee the country.
The statement directed all the security agencies to be at alert and arrest the self-acclaimed Yoruba activist wherever he is found, Sahara Reporters revealed.
Recall that Osun traditional ruler, Oba Abdulrasheed, the Oluwo of Iwo had condemned the activities of Sunday Igboho, and also pleaded with the Federal Government on his behalf.
In the letter, Oba Abdulrasheed stated that the wanted activist had suffered a lot and was ready to drop agitations. He also promised to come with Igboho to see the Federal Government at the appropriate time.
According to reports, plans to repatriate the activist back to Nigeria from Benin Republic is ongoing. He will likely face trial for illegal possession of firearms to destabilize the country as claimed by the DSS.
