Tragedy struck in Fadi Gurje Village, Mani Local Government Area of Katsina State, when the operative of the Nigeria Customs Service reportedly shot a 35- year- old man, identified as Auwal Sani, on the leg on Friday.
According to some residents of the area, who disclosed that some Customs operatives stormed the the village in a manner that can be likened to a movie scene and started shooting sporadically in the air for reasons still not known and Sani was unluckily hit on the leg by a bullet in the process.
It was gathered that the operatives after realising that Sani had been hit by the bullet, fled the scene while residents took to the street to protest the incident and it took the intervention of the police to restore order in the area.
This was confirmed by the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Gambo Isah, stating that efforts are ongoing towards identifying the erring officers and bring them to book.
He said, ” Report reaching my desk reveals that some Nigeria Custom Service officials in a patrol vehicle stormed Fadi Gurje village, Mani LGA of Katsina State, fired several shots into the air and escaped to an unknown destination.
” Consequently, one Auwal Sani, 35, of the same address was shot on the leg. The victim was rushed to the Orthopedic Hospital, Katsina, for treatment. Efforts are ongoing to identify the erring officers and bring them to justice. ‘ ‘
The PPRO also disclosed that the State Commissioner of Police has urged residents of the area to go about their normal lawful businesses as the police are collaborating with the leadership of the Nigeria Customs Service with an aim of resolving the issue.
However, efforts to reach Danbaba Isah, the spokesman of the Katsina State Command of NCS were unsuccessful as he did not reply text messages sent to his mobile phone as at time of filing this reports.
