The recent insecurity travails that have befallen travellers along Abuja- Kaduna highway is one that has heightened discussions around the country, particularly on the death of Sagir Hamidu (a former governorship aspirant in the 2019 election in Zamfara State) who was killed by bandits on Sunday along the embattled road.
Shehu Sani, a former Senator from Kaduna central who reacted to the killing of Sagir and the abduction of commuters along the embattled highway on Sunday posited, ” The galant female soldiers deployed along Kaduna- Abuja road are nowhere to be found. ”
Shehu Sani’ s observation is worthwhile, because it can be argued that the over 300 female soldiers could have averted these recent crimes on the embattled highway if only they were around according to Shehu Sani.
Why Female soldiers Were Deployed To The Abuja- Kaduna Highway
In January 2021, Governor Nasir El- Rufai of Kaduna state received 300 female soldiers deployed to secure the Abuja- Kaduna highway where several cases of kidnappings and killings were reported on a daily.
The women soldiers were meant to compliment existing operations along the notorious highway and its environs.
Reports said the first batch of the troops, who are of the Nigerian Army Women Corps (NAWC), were formally received by El- Rufai at their Kakau base on the highway.
Speaking on this, Governor El- Rufai had expressed optimism, noting that with the deployment of the female soldiers, the insecurity along the Abuja- Kaduna highway will soon be a thing of the past.
Insecurity Along Abuja- Kaduna Highway Refuses To Be A Thing Of The Past Amid Deployment of Female Soldiers
Despite the high hopes by El- Rufai who thought the deployment of the female soldiers to the embattled highway will end insecurity, on May 28, 2021, bandits blocked the Abuja- Kaduna road, kidnapped travellers.
According to Shehu Sani who said he received a distress call from a traveller, ” the bandits blocked the road between Jere and Katari at about 4 pm” .
On Twitter, Shehu Sani had said, ” I have just got a call that bandits have blocked the Kaduna Abuja road, in between Jere and Katari village in this broad daylight. Scores of people were kidnapped while many have made a fast u- turn in the face of gunshots. ”
Interestingly, a traveller who was familiar with the incident narrated to the PremiumTimes saying, ” I saw many cars turning back with their car headlights on, and many were parked at a distance for everything thing to calm” .
” Later we saw security operatives coming back towards us and we all joined other cars to continue our journey to Kaduna.
” When we got there, we were told by some people that the kidnappers have kidnapped scores of travellers before the operatives arrived the scene. Until we arrive at Kaduna this evening, everybody was scared. ”
