Nigerians all over the country will be able to make use of the popular microblogging website, Twitter after the federal government under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari lifted the ban on its usage across the country.
Recall that the federal government on 5th June 2021, suspended the operation of Twitter through an announcement made by the Honourable Minister of Information and Culture, Alh Lai Mohammed.
Even though the government disclosed that security and national unity are the reasons for the suspension, Buhari’ s administration was blasted by thousands of Nigerians who described the President as a clueless man.
However, the statement released by the presidency revealed that Buhari has approved the lifting of the suspension of the Twitter operation in Nigeria effective from 12 am tonight, 13th January 2022.
According to Today’ s Politics, the Director- General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, made this known in a statement on Thursday.
The statement read in part, ” The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) directs me to inform the public that President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has approved the lifting of the suspension of Twitter operation in Nigeria effective from 12 am tonight, 13th January 2022.
” The approval was given following a memo written to the President by the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Ali Ibrahim. In the Memo, the Minister updates and requests the President’ s approval for the lifting based on the Technical Committee Nigeria- Twitter Engagement’ s recommendation. ”
The statement to uplift the suspension has generated many reactions both within and outside Nigeria.
The US Reacted, Sends Message To Nigerians
The United States mission in Nigeria is one of the numerous individuals and organizations who have spoken on the unexpected decision of the federal government.
The mission took to its Twitter account to send a congratulatory message to Nigerians who have endured for over six months without making use of the microblogging site.

Atiku Abubakar Reacted, Says Nigerians Will Have Breath Of Fresh Air
The former Vice President and presidential candidate of the People Democratic Party, PDP, in the last general election, Atiku Abubakar, sent a congratulatory message to Nigerians, particularly those people that depend on Twitter before they could eat.
He added that the small businesses owners and the youths who are having difficult challenges with the decision of President Buhari will now have a breath of fresh air to thrive with their different businesses.
Atiku made this known while reacting to Twitter’ s restoration through his Twitter handle, he said, ” The effects of the #TwitterBan, particularly on small businesses, was evident for all to see. I am glad that the ban has finally been lifted, and our young people who are already dealing with the challenging business environment can now have a breath of fresh air to thrive. ”

He added that the use of Twitter has once again presented an opportunity to the youths who conduct legitimate business on the platform.
Saraki wrote on his Twitter handle, ” After 222 days, I am glad that the FG has finally reconsidered and reversed the #TwitterBan. With this reversal, the young people who conduct legitimate business on this platform can once again pursue their various endeavors and exercise their right to freedom of speech. ”
