The governor of Edo State, Governor Godwin Obaseki has called for the full implementation of the National Livestock Transformation Program NLTP to look into the problem of clashes between herders and farmers.
This statement was made by the governor on Wednesday, October 13th while addressing State House Correspondents after having a closed meeting with the president, Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Obaseki stated that the people of Edo had fallen back to ranching, saying that it is a private business and it needed such attention. In his words:
” Our people say that as far as they are concerned, ranching is a probate business just like every other agricultural venture, therefore, those involved should provide the land.
” As you already know, it is expensive to run and manage ranches. So I came to discuss with the president that since the people of Edo would rather invest privately.
” It should also be able to help Edo people benefit from the funding that is now being made available for people who want to go into the livestock business and have made an investment in ranches and another similar livestock program. ”
In Obaseki opinion, the state government is yet to make a law banning open grazing because it sees the venture as a private business. In his words:
” As you know, most southern states have passed laws relating to open grazing but Edo has not. Because we want to ensure that whatever laws we pass are laws that we can enforce.
” If we are asking that we should now have ranches and these cows should be constrained to specific areas such as ranches, then who provides the land. ”
In another news, the Edo state deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, has denied having any rift with his boss, Governor Obaseki.
He denied this while on Channels Television’ s Politics Today on Monday, September 13th, and restated his loyalty to Obaseki.
Though the governor stated that some issues are yet to be settled in the PDP, but that won’ t decide if he will stay or leave the party.
