“Honesty is the best policy”, is a popular saying that is not widely appreciated among most youths because of the situation of the country, however, there’s always a reward for honesty. As regards this, an incident which was reported by Punch Newspaper in a video explained how a 200 level Microbiology student returned a lost wallet which was owned by a lady.
The boy who is identified to be Philip Okafor looked for the owner of the wallet before giving her the wallet. As a result, he was awarded a scholarship as a reward for his action. According to him, he returned the wallet to justify his conscience. According to his narration with Punch Newspaper;
“My name is Philip Okafor, I’m a student of Microbiology, 200- Level, University of Benin. I’m the last born child of my family, a family of seven. When I saw the wallet, I was very tensed. I saw it at the lecture theatre, I couldn’t find the owner, so I took it home. I looked through the contents. I was able to make an announcement, I saw the name of the owner.”
“It dawned on me that I needed the money at that particular time, but I had a second thought about it. I was moved to take it but I had to do the right thing because I’ve always told myself that in all situations, I should always try to do what is right. I was moved to take it, but I had to just settle with my conscience because I would not be comfortable or happy that I took someone’s money.”
“I was never brought up that way, so I had to just tell the owner that your wallet and its content are intact. The money in the wallet was well over what I needed to take care of my school charges. The wallet contained five thousand nairas and a hundred dollars ($100), so I decided to return the money because it is not mine. So, the next day, I searched for her around the school and I returned the wallet with its content intact.”
“However, I was not able to pay my school fees, so I went to see the Dean. He allowed me access to him after the incident. I didn’t want to bother him because I know he was a busy man. So, I just wanted to plead with him to allow me to take my exams and to talk to my Head of Department – to allow me to take my exams that I would come up with the money next session. I was overwhelmed when he said he would get back to me because I thought he would just say “I would see what I can do” but I thank God for his good heart and benevolence.
“He called me back and told me that this is how we are going to do it. Then he said the faculty was going to pay for my school fees for the current session, down to my final year so, I thank God for everything and I’m grateful.”
