As the discourse on the 2023 presidential election continues to gain momentum, the Northern Consensus Movement has rejected the call for zoning and rotational presidency.
The president of the group, Awal Abdullah Aliyu made the statement at the just concluded “Nigeria’s 2023 presidential transition: Inter-ethnic peace dialogue” that was held at Transcorp Hotel.
The group noted that competency, love of the country, patriotism and credibility should be the yardstick for choosing the Nigerian President and not ethnicity or religion.
“Talking about rotational presidency, what I thought we should be looking at is credibility, competence, patriotism, nationalistic thinking, the love for one another and things like that. That’s what I thought should constitute who becomes the Nigerian President. Not regional, tribal, ethnic or any other thing.”
When the event attendees heard him and was murmuring over his statement, Abdullah Aliyu said ” Please disagree with me but I will speak. This is why we’re here. This is why we’re here. Let’s discuss the controversy and let’s find a solution to the problem. This is my position and this is the position of Northern Nigeria. If you disagree, make your position known”

He however noted that the group is not defending president Muhammadu Buhari lopsided appointments and asked Nigerians to call the attention of the president to any problem rather than seeing one tribe as the threat to the country.
