VIDEO: “Why It Is Difficult To Impeach President Muhammadu Buhari” – Babajide Kolade-Otitoju
spoke on the impeachment threat issue to President Muhammadu Buhari
by lawmakers of the People’s Democratic Party. During an interview on TVC News, the correspondent stated that there are about nine different stages as provide by the constitution of Nigeria.
The correspondent asked Babajide Kolade-Otitoju if the aggrieved lawmakers of the opposition party have the numbers to impeached the President and also if they need the support of the Senate President Ahmed Lawan
to carry out an impeachment? He said that they don’t need the Senate President’s support to impeach the president.
What they need is to have the majority vote of the Senate members, and if they have this, then even the Senate President could be sacrificed to achieve the impeachment. No Nigerian president have ever been impeached, and it’s even difficult to impeach a governor.l because of the tremendous hurdles to be scaled through.
Even when the president is found guilty of an offense, the chief justice have to setup a panel to investigate, and if he is found innocent, he cannot be impeached. An example is when Nasarawa state governor was nearly impeached, but the chief judge found no reason for his impeachment, and it couldn’t be completed.
According to him, the judicial arm of government must look into the impeachment and find it reasonable before it can be effective.
In my opinion, this impeachment threat cannot be effective because president Muhammadu Buhari
have few months till the end of his tenure. The lawmakers should give him all the support he needs to tackle insecurity, and return the country to normalcy before he leaves office, as trying to impeach him will take time, waste efforts and resources.
