From the video, it can be seen that a coalition of armed units of ISWAP faction under the interim leadership of Abu Musab Al Barnawi consisting of several child jihadist launched the ambush on the Nigerian troops camp that is located in a military base given by sources as Almajiri Camp near Maimalari Barack, Maiduguri, Borno state.
This is one of the first major successful tactical attacks, even though no casualties were recorded on the side of the Nigerian Army. Since ISWAP elements claimed responsibility for causing d death by suicide of rival JAS leader Abubakar Shekau.
From the images shared, attackers can be seen with standard weapons (RPG-7 w/ OG-7V, AKM/S, Type 56 variants, Type 88 HMG, etc. However, the terrorists captured Nigerian Army equipment which includes; a DICON Ezugwu MRAP, three Nigerian Army vehicles, which were also stripped of their mounted HMG. As you can see, once again, one of the vehicles is so new it has its emissions sheet still attached to the window.
Furthermore, this attack will come as a big nightmare for the Nigerian military. They were rejoicing when ISWAP invaded Sambisa and the subsequent death of Shekau thinking they would continue fighting each other but the opposite happened. A study of visual proofs of armoured vehicles captured & destroyed by ISWAP/Boko Haram insurgents continue to prove that these vehicles are scattered across the entire front line.
This tactic used by the Nigerian military is defensive in nature and not good enough. Nigerian Army does not have an attack posture. Although, heavy equipment are ineffective in asymmetrical warfare, i.e US fighting insurgencies in Iraq and Afghanistan. Time after time these equipment are being overrun and precious equipment lost.
Nigerian Army should not be always defensive but should go after these terrorists who are determined to destroy this country at all cost.
