“We Only Conducted Operation GOLDEN DAWN, Biafrans Should Be Held Responsible For Burning Down Houses”- Army Says

The Nigerian Army has denied the report that it burnt down houses and shops in Awo- Mmamma community in Oru East Local Government Area of Imo State on Monday.

Recall, several news websites reported on Monday, 22 November, that members of the Nigerian army burnt houses and stores while revenging the death of a soldier who was killed by gunmen, during a gun battle that ensued between the soldiers deployed in the community and IPOB security operatives.

Reacting to the report, Major Abubakar Abdullahi, who happens to be the acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations, 82 Division Nigerian Army, denied the report, claiming that the attack was done by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

He made the claim in a statement he released during the afternoon hours of Tuesday.

While accusing Members of IPOB for burning houses and shops, he said that the military only conducted Exercise Golden Dawn in Awo- Mmamma community and that they didn’ t destroy any property owned by the peace- loving people of the community.

Speaking further, he said that the proscribed group should be held responsible for the crimes committed within and around the community while trying to enforce their Monday sit- at- home order.

He opined that in the quest to enforce Nigerians in the community to obey the unlawful sit- at- home order, members of the proscribed group ” indulged in harassment, intimidation and physical abuse of commuters going about their lawful businesses. ”

He stretched that IPOB members went further to destroy shops, homes of people ‘ as a vendetta against the citizens for not complying with the illegal order’ given by their leaders.

Abdullahi confirmed that the military killed a gunman suspected to be a member of IPOB and that a soldier was killed by the gunmen during a gun battle.
