According to a statement released by Special Assistant (Media) to The Governor of Rivers State, Kelvin Ebiri.
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, has announced N20 Million compensation to the families of each of the soldiers and policemen killed by members of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples Organization of Biafra (IPOB) in Oyigbo last week.
Governor Wike stated this during a condolence visit to the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mukan, and families of the slain policemen at the Rivers State Police Command on Wednesday.
We must commend Governor Wike for this kind gesture. However, please, ensure the money is paid directly to the victim’s account and not through a third-party.
These are the best unofficial life insurance benefits I have seen in Nigeria. And it will go a long way in ameliorating the suffering and grief of the families.
Here are some people’s reactions below:
I am not a supporter of IPOB, but It will be very unfair and unfortunate for anyone to conclude that IPOB members killed the policemen.
According to the police PRO in River State, investigations are on to unearth everyone involved in this wicked act. Series of arrests have been made. As a responsible government, wouldn’t be appropriate for these investigations to be over before this kind of obvious pronouncement?
Since Rivers State govt have set the standard, they should ensure families of those killed by Police in Rivers state are given the same compensation.
