The heightened herders and farmers clashes especially in Benue State made Governor Samuel Ortom enact the bill that banned all forms of open grazing after it was approved by the Benue State House of Assembly.

However, since the ban of open grazing in Benue State, there have been increased altercations between the Benue state governor and the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria. Miyetti Allah group had accused the governor of infringing on the fundamental rights of Fulani herders by enacting and enforcing the law against open grazing while on the other hand, Governor Ortom had accused the Fulani group of supporting those carrying out the killings against Benue State residents.

To this, a recent media report has it that the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria has called out on Governor Ortom so that they could have meaningful discussions so that there could be a solution to the clashes that have occurred and also find ways to having a lasting peaceful coexistence between the Fulani herders and Benue State residents.

Going through the report, it is obvious that Miyetti Allah is seeking ways by which the Benue State governor could accommodate the activities of Fulani herders by reaching a possible compromise that will benefit both the Miyetti Allah and Benue State.

Hence, I think one possible way is to ask the governor for the erection of ranching sites that will see the herders pasturing for their cattle in the ranch rather than roaming within the state. This ranching will curb the crises because cases of destruction of farmlands by the cattle will no longer be possible. Also, the erection of ranches will create jobs because there will be security men, cleaners, and other technical workers. Also, this will make way for proper documentation of all herders that will exist within the state, and hence the activity of all herders within the ranch will be supervised.

In all, the Miyetti Allah group has to understand that Governor Samuel Ortom is the chief security officer of the state, and enacting the law against open grazing is what he felt was good for the people of Benue State, after due deliberation by the state assembly, hence Miyetti Allah should respect what the governor has stipulated is best for the people of Benue State (ban of open grazing).
