Why The APC May Struggle To Win Governorship Elections In These Two South- South States

Two of the South- South states whose gubernatorial seats will be contested in the 2023 gubernatorial elections are likely to be exceedingly tough for the All Progressives Congress (APC) to win, for a variety of obvious reasons.

Aside from the apparent strength of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Congress (APC) has continued to endure internal problems, defections, and even a crisis in some of these states.

Certainly, if these issues continue, the party may have difficulty matching the PDP’ s strength in the upcoming governorship elections in these states.

Please see below for a list of these southern states and the reasons why the APC may have a difficult time winning the governorship election in 2023.

  1. Rivers State.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has continued to suffer from internal problems, which is partly owing to the persistent feud between former Senator Magnus Ngei Abe and the current Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.

Aside from this, the party has also had some of its members switch to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in recent years in the state. In light of these issues, unless the APC can stem the tide, it may find it difficult to assemble the necessary strength to overthrow the incumbent party in 2023.

If the internal difficulties that have bedevilled the party continue, the PDP may continue to prosper and grow in strength in the state as things stand. The question is whether the APC will be able to achieve the necessary stability and unity in time for the election.

  1. Akwa Ibom State.

As in Rivers State, the Akwa Ibom APC has continued to endure divisions as a result of an internal conflict.

Individuals loyal to the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio, and Senator Akpan John Udoedeghe, reportedly held a parallel congress to elect leaders for the party in the state lately.

This rift, which appears to be increasing at the moment, may provide an additional advantage to the ruling PDP in the run- up to the elections.

Winning the governorship election in Akwa Ibom in 2023 may become practically impossible if the internal problems that the opposition party is experiencing continue.
