Wizkid is one of the most popular music artists in the whole of Nigeria and arguably the most popular in Africa. While he is basically a household name in Nigeria, Wizkid is not a rare name in the lips of people of other African countries.
Right from the time of releasing his first ever hit music single, “Holla at your boy,” Wizkid has been relentlessly giving us, his loyal fans, undeniable smash hits almost from back to back including the beautiful “Ontop your matter”, “Ojuelegba”, “Soco”, “Manya” and the more recent “Joro.” His songs are almost always pleasant sounding to the ear and soothing to the soul.
Despite Wizkid’s undeniable dexterity and success in music, at the time of writing this, he still hasn’t bagged a Grammy award or even a nomination. Interestingly, Burna Boy, who arguably isn’t as popular as Wizkid in Africa, was able to bag a Grammy nomination next to One of Africa’s music veterans, Angelique Kidjo.
The reason why Wizkid hasn’t bagged a grammy yet might be because of his approach to international collaborations. It would appear Wizkid isn’t so big on international collaborations although he’s worked with globally known stars like Drake and Beyonce.
Burna Boy, on the other hand, prioritizes seemingly random international collaborations and interactions so his music is basically more internationally known than Wizkid’s. If Wizkid doesn’t get a more global audience, he may never get a Grammy.
If Wizkid starts doing more international collaborations with very popular international artistes and increases his global appeal, he’s well on his way to bagging multiple Grammies because he’s got the raw talent in him.
